Precision-Machined Weld Test Coupons. The Foundation of a Valid Qualification.
Qualification (WPQ): The specific act of testing a welder against a single WPS, typically for a specific employer and project. It results in a WPQ record, which is usually company-specific. Its validity is often tied to the welder continuing to weld using that process for that employer.
Certification (e.g., AWS Certified Welder): A broader, portable credential that often involves successfully completing one or more performance qualifications under standardized conditions, and may also involve a written knowledge exam. It is administered by a certifying body (like AWS) and is a credential that belongs to the welder, making it portable between employers. It signifies a standardized, nationally recognized level of competence.

The weld test coupon is the canvas upon which a welder proves their skill. It is not merely a piece of metal; it is a precisely engineered sample whose dimensions, preparation, and material composition are strictly dictated by welding codes such as AWS D1.1 and ASME Section IX. These codes specify tolerances that are often incredibly tight sometimes as little as 1/64 of an inch or one degree. Any deviation from these specifications a root face that is a thirty-second of an inch too large, a bevel angle that is a degree off, or the use of a material that doesn’t match the Mill Test Report can invalidate the entire qualification test, regardless of the welder’s skill or the beauty of the resulting weld.
A CWI must verify coupon dimensions before testing. If the coupon is out of tolerance, the test cannot proceed resulting in total loss of time and material.
The welder’s time, the CWI’s time, and the material cost are all lost when a test is invalidated. Add project delays, and a single failed test can quickly escalate into thousands of dollars in losses.
A failed test caused by prep errors outside the welder’s control is discouraging and frustrating. It can shake their confidence and create added stress going into future qualification tests.
An incorrect bevel angle changes heat flow and dilution, causing weld flaws that come from bad coupon prep not the welder’s skill.
