NY Welding LLC is a leading provider of structural steel inspection services, employing AWS Certified Welding Inspectors (CWI) with direct experience on some of the most demanding projects. We understand that the fabrication shop and the construction site are dynamic environments where schedules are tight and pressures are high. Our role is to be the consistent, impartial guardian of the code. We ensure that qualified welders are using qualified procedures to produce welds that meet the specified quality standards. Our inspection provides the owner, engineer, and fabricator with the confidence that the welded structure will perform as designed throughout its intended lifespan, resisting the forces of gravity, wind, and seismic events.
Expert Guidance Is One Appointment Away.
Even the most beautiful weld can harbor microscopic surface-breaking discontinuities that act as stress concentrators and initiation points for fatigue cracks or corrosion. Visual inspection, while crucial, has its limitations. Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT) is a widely used, highly sensitive non-destructive method designed to amplify these subtle surface flaws, making them easily visible to an inspector. The principle is simple yet powerful: a low-viscosity, brightly colored or fluorescent liquid is drawn into surface defects by capillary action, and then a developer is applied to draw the penetrant back out, creating a visible “bleed-out” indication that is much larger than the actual flaw.
This is the most important step. The test surface must be thoroughly cleaned of all paint, rust, scale, oil, grease, and other contaminants that could block the penetrant from entering a flaw or create false indications.
The liquid penetrant is then applied evenly to the surface by spraying, brushing, or dipping. The penetrant is given a specified "dwell time" to allow it to be drawn into any surface-breaking defects by capillary action.
After the dwell time, the excess penetrant on the surface is carefully removed. This is a delicate step; removing too much can wash the penetrant out of the flaws, while removing too little can cause excessive background noise, masking real indications.
A thin, uniform layer of developer is then applied. The developer acts like a blotter, drawing the trapped penetrant back out of the flaw and spreading it across the surface. This process magnifies the visibility of the flaw, creating a clear indication.
Their expertise, clarity, and precision transformed our welding process—and the results spoke for themselves.
Comprehensive welding engineering, code-compliant qualification services, and expert training to ensure your projects meet the highest standards of quality, safety, and performance.
